Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Proverbs 18:21
My sister gave me this book mark 15 years ago. It was in celebration of a milestone in my life. On April 13, 2002, after 21 years in the telecommunications industry, I left Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic, Bell of Pennsylvania, and my favorite, Ma Bell) to pursue my dream of becoming a published author. The first thing I did was to transform my basement into a home office, complete with a brand new desk top computer and office furniture from my favorite store, IKEA. Then I created an online store to sell products featuring my poetry, like a wall calendar, a 12 month calendar, journals, and greeting cards (www.cafepress.com/poetriciapub). That October I attended my first Christian Writers Conference at Sandy Cove Christian Retreat Center in Maryland. It was so thrilling to be a room with hundreds of Christian writers, editors, publishers and agents. I left determined to become a modern day Helen Steiner-Rice. Little did I know it would be eight more years until my dream of becoming a published author would finally be realized.
During those eight years, there were several people who constantly encouraged me not to let go of my dream. One was my mother, who, as most mothers are, has been and still is my biggest supporter. Another one was my sister Lisa.
More than giving me this book mark back in 2002 (which I still have today) she is living proof that dreams do come true. As a business owner, entrepreneur, volunteer, and mentor in her own right, she is my living, breathing example of how to hold on to, pursue, and never let go of your dreams.
But more than that, the one thing that stands out in my mind is that no matter how busy or challenged my sister is on any given day, it has never stopped her from helping, supporting, and encouraging someone else.
Although I am now the author of six books of my own (with a few more in development), I've gained something even more valuable: my sister's ability to speak life into someone else's dreams.
In addition to publishing my own books, last year I became a Memoir Writing Coach at a Senior Living Facility in South Jersey. I've expanded my dream to include helping others bring their stories to print.
Speak life into someone else's dream. You're already living yours.
