This blog is dedicated to my twins, Gregory and Angella. Today is their 35th birthday.
My memory goes back to the day before they were born, because December 1st was my due date. Yes, not only did I carry twins to full term, I actually went past my due date! At the time I was living with my grandmother and I was upset because December 1st was coming to a close and I still wasn't in labor. First I started going up and down the stairs to make myself go into labor, but that didn't work. Then my grandmother made me a hot toddy (hot tea with a "touch" of Manischewitz wine). It was tasty, but that didn't work either. I remember going to bed mad, with my grandmother's laughter in the background. As I sipped that tea at her kitchen table while she told stories of how she went two weeks past a due date with one uncle and one week past her due date with another uncle. Like I wanted to hear that. I'm smiling now just thinking of that.
Finally, the next day, December 2nd, around 5:30 pm I began having what I thought were more "pressure pains" so went to take a nap. I didn't realize the pains were contractions because they felt like the same pressure pains I'd been having for the previous two weeks. But somehow my grandmother knew and while I was taking that nap she tracked down my father, and called my father to come get me and take me to the hospital. We arrived at Jefferson around 7:30 pm and I gave birth three hours later, but during the hours in between, if God hadn't stepped in, things would have turned out a lot differently.
You see, while they were prepping me for natural child birth when I heard a nurse say "Let's do an ultra sound to see where the other twin is". Well, low and behold, Baby A (Gregory) was in a "transverse" position, laying across my womb, and Baby B (Angella), was in a breech position. Had they tried to proceed with a natural child birth, complications would have surely followed. I never found out who that nurse was, but I praise God for speaking through her and I praise God for the doctor on call heeding her words! Even in my low estate, God covered me and my children on that day, and all the days that have followed. They were born later that night at 10:19 and 10:20 pm - healthy, happy and whole. All these years later, they are still healthy, happy and whole to God be the glory!
"My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. For he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden." Luke 1:47
